Sakkarai(Sweet) Pongal Recipe

Pongal is a festival celebrated in South India as a festival of harvest. In North India, it is celebrated as Makar Sankranti.It can be made either sweet or savory.Sweet Pongal is a kind of Jaggery rice, usually eaten during festivals. My MIL makes sweet pongal, ven pongal and medu vada.It’s the traditional sweet pongal recipe. So here I am with the recipe which I made today. This is one of my favorite one. Ingredients

Quantity

Raw rice

1 cup

Moong dal

¼ cup

Jaggery

1 ¼ cup+1/2 cup water

Milk

1 cup

Water

4 cups

Cardamom powder

¼ tsp

Cashews

15 nos

Raisins

2 tbsp.

Cloves

2 no’s

Ghee

½ cup

Method

1. Take 1 tsp of ghee and roast moong dal till nice aroma comes. Remove on to a bowl.Wash roasted dal along with rice.

2. Put this in a pressure cooker along with milk and water. Now cover with a lid. Cook for 3 whistles or for 15-20 mins on low flame.Completely dissolve jaggery in half cup of water in a shallow pan.Filter the jaggery to avoid any impurities.Pour this jaggery water over the cooked rice and dal and mix well.

3. Fry cashewnuts and raisins separately in ghee. Mix it to the prepared pongal and add cardamom powder.Stir for 5 mins on a low flame.

4. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

Grated coconut can also be added at the last for a rich taste.

Drizzle some pure ghee over the finished pongal for more taste and flavor.
